The demands on knowledge in a changing society
School in Sweden today is based on a qualitative view of learning. Learnnig constitutes, figuratively speaking, a toolbox in which the tools represent different standards of knowledge and abilities to be used in various situations, for example the student’s ability to partake actively in a discussion on a topic, or to examine something and draw conclusions.
Qualitative learning implies that the students are active in the learning process and develop their proficiency in various ways instead of being taught facts and figures to learn by heart.
The role of the teacher is to guide the students and to plan the education in a way that enables them to develop and practise the knowledge and abilities needed.
Education is no longer based on the idea of the students learning and “storing” facts to be perfectly reproduced by the “best” students.
Knowledge that can be applied to a number of different situations is of vital importance in today’s society.
