The curriculum defines rules and guidelines and it regulates school activities. There are three different curricula in Sweden – Curriculum for the Preschool (Lpfö 98), Curriculum for the Compulsory School System, the Preschool Class and the Leisure-time Centre (Lpo 94), and Curriculum for the Non-compulsory School System (Lpf 94). All three curricula are laid out in about the same way and define knowledge and learning in similar terms.
An important part of the curriculum establishes that all students should get an education adapted to individual circumstances and needs, enabling them to develop their particular abilities and interests. The school should, in cooperation with the home, endeavour to meet each individual student’s needs and provide adequate support, in order for the student to develop in accordance with the goals expressed in the curriculum.
The curriculum defines the responsibility of the school to impart, instil and form in pupils the fundamental democratic values of our society. In addition, the school should promote each student’s sense of justice, responsibility, understanding for others and the ability to empathise.
The task of the school
Furthermore, the school should promote the students’ learning in order to prepare them to live and work in society. The goals for each individual subject are defined in the syllabi, which are supplements to the curriculum.
